RALPH'S PICK OF THE FRINGE
Ralph Oswick, Artistic Director of Bath's Natural Theatre Company, gives us his unbiased and completely independent recommendations of up and coming fringe events.
I hate moaners. Forever complaining that there is nothing interesting happening in Bath. The Fringe this year surely puts a stop to all that! There really is something for everyone, bearing in mind that the first Bath Fringe Festival in the early seventies consisted of a roll of newsprint paper and some poster paints in Victoria Park!
Me moan? Never! I simply go to as many events as possible, especially these:
Friday 30th May: SEX PIG. Ring O Bells 8pm: Lee Coombes tells dirty stories about pork pies, amongst other things. One critic said that this show made him want to kill himself. That's one less bastard critic then.
Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June: THE QUEST: Starts at Green Park Station 2.30pm: OK. So I'm not totally unbiased. This is a magical mystery walking tour with a difference, and of course a Natural Theatre co-production. Which means we are only half to blame if it's crap! It's free, but you do need a ticket, which you can find at events marked with a 'Q' in the printed Fringe Prog. Or you can cheat by phoning Sarah at 469131. Or you can risk it by just turning up. But there are only 100 tickets per walk.
Every night: FRINGE CLUB AT BONGHY BO: 9pm… or is it 9.30? Depends who you ask. Fight it out with the door staff, but do come, because for only £3 (or a tenner for a season ticket) you can stay until 1.30. At last we have a civilised, attractive, comfortable, entertaining club venue, where you can network on the terrace, gossip about the shows you've seen, ogle the gorgeous bar staff and eavesdrop on c-list celebs. And see some lively acts.
Sunday 1st June: TINA C LIFESTYLE GURU: Rondo 8pm: Anything at The Rondo is a good bet. If you have never been to this unique gem of a venue, why shame on yo'. If you like outrageous innuendo, sparkling tastelessness and rhinestone-encrusted denim, then Tina is the girl/boy for you!
Friday 6th June: NAKED VOICES: St. Matthew's Church, Widcombe Hill 8.15pm: Great acoustics, great acapella. Why not meet your pals for a pre-show drink in the beautiful secret garden at the White Hart nearby. And make an evening of it by hurrying to The Ring O Bells afterwards for a superb supper?
I don't need to mention Walcot Nation Day, because you all go to that anyway, and so does everyone else. The organisers say it will be more family-friendly this year. I suppose that must mean that some of the bozos have had kids. Oops, hush my mouth.
Well, that's my choice. Plus everyone must visit the fabulous Spiegeltent at least once. It's on the rugby pitch near the weir and free during the day. Also, it is your Fringe duty to see at least one band that you have never heard of and to attend at least one esoteric art event, even if you are going to moan about it in the Fringe Club afterwards.
As Tina C would say, 'Enjoy!!!' Probably.
