Welcome
to Fringe '98

The Bath Fringe has existed in its current shape for longer than anyone, even some of
its founders, believed likely - we're only saved from un-Fringing ourselves into
established predictability by a constant influx of new ideas and energy, enabling us to
create new events and re-shape old ones in tune with what both artists and audiences
require. We hope you see that reflected in this year's programme. If you don't see what
you want, come and organise it yourself for next year.
The festival is organised by a voluntary co-operative of local artists, promoters and
(extra-)ordinary audience-members. We're particularly grateful to B&NES Council for
their continued support of this event, and for providing core funding. We must also thank
all the local businesses who sponsor events - and of course yourselves for buying tickets.
The committee programmes about half the events in this brochure, but the Fringe would
not be the Fringe without the many community arts groups who get involved each year to
promote their own events under the Fringe umbrella. If you have any ideas for Fringe '99
please call our office and speak to our administrator Wendy Matthews.
The Festival would not have been possible without: David, Ali, Felicity Bowers, Jenni
Nicholson, Heather, Caron, Steve, Liz, Chris, Nick, John.
The programme was as up-to-date as we could manage, but it is in the nature of all
things to change, and of fringe things even more so. Though we believed everything in this
programme was accurate at that point, we accept no responsibility for reality getting out
of tune with the printed word afterwards. If you're travelling a long way to an event you
don't have a ticket for it's worth checking with the venues (not the Fringe office) before
you set out. For details of Fringe Club and Bedlam Fair acts & timings see full
publicity available mid-May.for the uppest of the updates & a million new Bath things,
take a look at http://progress.ukonline.co.uk
The Rondo in Larkhall, a venue for many of the fringe events, also has its own website
at http://bathfringe.co.uk/rondo.
The Window Arts Centre, another fringe venue, organises other events throughout the
year, for more information see http://www.window.demon.co.uk
