Walcot Nation DayMany people's favourite event of last year was this triumphant homage to the Walcot Festivals, a big and crazy day out (just like the originals) hosted by the people & traders of the Fringe's spiritual home. All reports suggest that this year's will be bigger and crazier, featuring even more bands, DJs, performers and diversions than ever before. All reports suggest you should be here. Walcot Street & around |
| Bath Fringe, the Natural Theatre, the Bell & Hat &
Feather, Bike Events, Walcot Rec., Harvest, Nasher's and all the other artist/tradespeople
of Bath's most individual not to say eccentric street - none of these would be the same
today were it not for the Walcot Festivals, organised by and with many of the above,
throughout the '70s and early '80s. In fact Bath itself wouldn't be the same - ask anyone
who grew up in the city during that period and they'll tell you it's the most fun they can
remember having without conspicuously breaking any laws.
Last year the Fringe got together with the most community-conscious of the street's businesses to celebrate the 18th anniversary of one of the biggest events in the history of the Walcot Nation, the year it declared itself Independent, and the resulting one-day street party was, again, the most fun many people can remember having without... etc. This year's party is still in the planning stages, but we can reveal that dozens of the most popular performers to range up & down the street will be putting in an appearance on any one of the 4 music stages, DJ arena, streetside pitches and odd corners of the temporary autonomous zone, there will be a full and varied market in the TramShed (the fleamarket site), kids' events and more on the field behind the Village Hall, and a thousand other unprogrammed & unprogrammable opportunities for considerable hilarity. Food stalls, bars, tea gardens, everything you could want to eat and drink, and suitable souvenirs of your afternoon in a different world. Admission only with passport, £2, preferably
purchased in advance. |

Walcot Nation's Dancing DaysAs part of Nation day, the Fringe has commissioned local artist Julie Starks to create a carnival-style procession with young people from Riverside, the youth club and activity centre on the London Road. Inspired by the 'Wild' theme of the festival (never more appropriate than on Nation Day), thay have taken ideas from the anatomy of plants & insects, vines & flying things, to make a series of masks, costumes and larger mobile structures from 'junk' and recycled items, and will be getting into the wild spirit with all manner of exotic head-dresses, costumes, face & body paints. Joining them in the procession will be members and machines from bath's new cycle-powered circus, and... Patua DanceThis effervescent unusual and colourful Latin-style company will also be joining the carnival parade. "With Patua Dance leading the way it was not long before the entire village was dancing to the beat of the drums." Herald of Wales. |
Jay DensonThe only musical experience we could think of big enough to round off & out this day of utter madness! Jay is an acknowledged master of the mighty Hammond Organ and you simply won't experience this close up in any other context, complete with multiple Leslies, pedal bass and a set of utter grooves & deep blues reminiscent of Jimmy Smith, Lonny Liston Smith, Jimmy McGriff. Add hard-blowing post-Bop jazz sidemen and you've got the reason why Jay already has a substantial cult following in town. Hat & Feather 9pm |
