Kate Rusbyplus support Hundreds of articles have been written about the young generation who are revitalising British folk music, Kate has scored highly in every one - and, to our ears and minds, this warm Yorkshire lass is probably the best of the lot. Mostly traditional ballads you've never heard like this before will ensure a long career and plenty of those "I saw her back when..." conversations in years to come. Window Arts Centre 8pm At all of 24 years old, Kate Rusby has already had a career that many folk singers would have dreamed of back in the bad old days before British Folk got rediscovered. Breathtaking duo LP with Kathryn Roberts in the eminently fashionable two girls format; narrow brush with major record label music-making methods with the much hyped Equation, which she carefully left early enough to make the move an advantage rather than an albatross; recruitment into one of the circuit's sure-fire supergroups, the magnificent Poozies (also an all-fem thing); crowned with a solo album release last year, 'Hourglass', which topped many critic's and buyers' best-of-year lists. While the faint-hearted were fusioning or peddling Celtic mist, Kate went
back to her first love, traditional song (she was brought up in the post-'60s home musical
environment that all today's charmers seem to share) and is enjoying frequent comparisons
with the acknowledged greats of the last generation (Tabor) and praises from the other
side of the sexual divide (Thompson, Tams). From an unashamed apprenticeship in folk clubs
and small festivals she's learned a lovely unpretentious, humorous, even scatty mode of
between-song chat that endears her to audiences almost as her smouldering, smoky,
emotional yet understated vocal delivery. Set to be one of this year's favourites. |
